Varsity Lakes was originally known as Stephens Swamp, a low lying wetland named after former Brisbane mayor Thomas Blacket Stephens, before being launched in 1999 as a master planned community by developer Delfin Lend Lease on a 343 hectare site. As part of the development, the existing Lake Orr was expanded to around 80 hectares specifically for stormwater management, alongside additional wetlands and open space, before the suburb was formally renamed Varsity Lakes in 2002 and gazetted the following year.
